Prior experience working in a high intake animal shelter or veterinary clinic performing comparable work to this position. Two years of experience in the care and treatment of animals. License, Certification and Other Requirements:Ĭurrent Washington State driver's license. This position requires a pre-employment background check and a physical exam. Must be able to obtain a Washington State Euthanasia Certification after hire. Exposed to noise, dangerous animals with a potential for attack and animal feces that may be contaminated with disease germs transmittable to humans. May be exposed to hostile or abusive members of the public. Must be able to stand, walk, bend, and stoop to perform duties. One year experience in the care of and treatment of animals (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides equivalent background required to perform the work of the class). Work with shelter volunteers in a constructive and positive manner. Conduct educational activities both at the shelter and at off-site locations. Counsel potential pet owners in adopting an animal of the appropriate size, breed, and disposition explain responsibilities of animal ownership including the importance of proper care, feeding, grooming, and spay/neutering. A Washington State Euthanasia Technician Certification is required after hire. Perform humane euthanasia of all types of animals when necessary. Network with other animal welfare agencies to transfer animals from the shelter and intake when appropriate. Notify pet owners by phone or certified letter of their pet's detainment. Identify and handle wild or vicious animals, using proper handling precautions including Ketch-Pole restraint, use and maintenance. Conduct behavioral assessments of animals in shelter. Coordinate veterinary exams, scheduling appointments and follow up visits. 
Follow veterinary medical direction including administration of medications and treatment procedures. Identify sick and diseased animals, taking precautions to prevent the spread of disease to other animals or humans.Receive and provide intake exams for all animals delivered to the shelter vaccinate if necessary, and record pertinent information.Provide daily, appropriate food and water for cats, dogs, wildlife and small domestic animals of all types.Use of email to communicate in an appropriate manner to foster parents, volunteers, staff, citizens and veterinary clinics. Use a computer to input information regarding animals received by the shelter and to process adoptions and redemptions.
Answer questions, in person or by telephone, from the general public concerning adoptions, redemptions, lost animals, impounding of animals, the operations and policies of the shelter, and animal control ordinances.Safely and appropriately handle cats, dogs, critters, and wildlife on a daily basis.Clean water bowls, food dishes, and related kennel equipment. Rinse, scrub, and disinfect animal cages, hallways, floors, walls, and isolation/quarantine areas.The work of this position contributes to sustaining the shelter's current gold standard save rate for animals of 93%. Reporting to the Animal Care Supervisor, this position is responsible for providing quality husbandry for the approximately 4,000 animals that come into the shelter on a yearly basis.
